60% of new start-up businesses are home based

Reassuring news for anybody who is thinking off setting up a new business from home in 2008. You’re not alone and, what’s more, your aspiration is key to the UK’s economic future. According to a new survey carried out by the website, Enterprise Nation, home-based businesses account for 60% of new start-ups, with professional services like Auditel accounting for many of these. In terms of the people behind these new businesses, the survey found entrepreneurs across every demographic and region in the UK, with particular growth coming from the under 25’s, mothers who want more flexibility to pursue a career and time with their children, and over 50’s who want to leave the shackles of corporate life behind.

The three key reasons for starting a home-based business were cited as:

  • low overheads and commuting time;
  • the availability of technology, such as the internet, that allows small businesses to punch above their weight in the marketplace; and
  • the opportunity to choose working hours and achieve a better work/life balance
  • jjjjj
    The report also clearly showed something that we have been saying at Auditel for many years, i.e. that working from home and ambition are not mutually exclusive. It’s perfectly possible to pursue a career and achieve both financial and professional success, without climbing the slippery ladder of corporate life. 100% of people who responded to the survey claimed they intended to increase turnover in the next 12 months, 86% believe they will achieve their targets by running their business from home and 63% would rather stay small and outsource projects than employ staff. Understanding the importance of ambition and setting targets is the cornerstone of the Auditel support system and is one of the reasons we’ve developed our bespoke Business Management Toolkit. Not only does this help our franchisees to develop clear business plans, but it accurately measures their progress against the targets they set, ensuring accountability and helping us to effectively and proactively support them.Of course, home-based self employment isn’t all rosy. There are, inevitably, challenges, although finding new customers isn’t the main one. According to respondents to the survey, achieving financial stability, finding the right support networks and getting information and advice are much bigger hurdles to success. Being a home-based franchisee with Auditel, however, will help to mitigate these challenges, while allowing your entrepreneurial spirit to thrive.
