But you’d be wrong. After all, your business, however small, has to stand for something. It has to have an identity. Branding is simply how you communicate this identity, which means, of course that branding is pretty much everything your company ever does. As author, blogger, web-innovator and ‘Good Experience’ guru, Mark Hurst puts it, “The brand is the customer experience.” Independent brand development consultant, Scott Bedbury, who has previously worked with giants like Starbucks and Nike, takes this a step further, saying “It is not just what you do anymore. It is also how you do it.”
This was very much our philosophy when, last summer, we took a long hard look at our corporate website (the one that presents the Auditel network and service to potential clients). While it looked good, had nice images and conformed to our corporate colour scheme, we had to admit that it didn’t really tell visitors anything about what makes our consultants special. So, we started again. From scratch, working with experts in the field of search engine optimisation and web design.
Of course we wanted a good-looking site that potential clients could find, but we also wanted one that reflected, on a computer screen, what we want our clients to experience when they work with our franchisees. We wanted one that was professional open, and honest. A site that was easy to communicate with. A site that would tell visitors what they wanted to know, not what we wanted them to know. A site that spoke in plain English and not marketing-speak. In other words, a website that would leave them better informed and help them make the right decision for their business.
