When his wife had a baby earlier this year, Stephen Sowerby had already established the ideal solution for him to be able to balance his work around his new family.
As a twenty-something qualified accountant, with five years’ experience in a ‘Big Four’ accountancy firm under his belt, Stephen made the decision to ‘seize the day’ while he was still young enough to be able to enjoy it. “My dream goal was to be self-employed.” he says. “I hated commuting into the City each day; I don’t know how people do it for so long!”
Making a change
In 2011, he began researching how best to use his skills and experience, to make the move from employment to running his own business. “Having trained as an accountant, specialising in data analytics and project management, I knew I could make a go of it. Especially once I had understood the structure of franchising, and discovered Auditel.”
Stephen, like many others, hadn’t previously considered franchising as a route to self-employment, “I hadn’t realised franchising was a genuinely viable step into self-employment. I was researching what was needed to manage my own business, when an internet search led me to the British Franchising Association (bfa) website. The explanation of franchising as a stable start for business development piqued my interest. I came across Auditel through the bfa, and was drawn to them as they appeared to suit my skills.”

This level of flexibility has been exactly what Stephen has most benefited from as his young family has grown, alongside his successfully growing business. “Earlier this year, we welcomed our daughter into the world. Having the freedom and time to enjoy these early stages of her life has been exactly why I wanted to avoid commuting into the City. I’ve worked hard to reach this point, by following the Auditel model.
