A mid-life career change, doesn’t have to be a crisis – it could be your best opportunity yet

When the threat of redundancy, or career change hits, many mid-lifers are choosing to create their own success. Bringing together all the experience and skills gained over the years means self-employment is a more viable option than ever before. This is even more so with the increased security of a proven franchising opportunity, such as Auditel.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics, commissioned by the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE), found over the last ten years, an increase of 46.5 per cent in over 50’s entering self-employment. The Guardian also reported, in May 2017, how this age group contributes over £119bn to the UK economy every year.

One of the strongest self-employment areas suitable for mid-life age group, based on their skill-sets, is management consultancy. In the Financial Times, Christopher Brooks, senior policy manager at Age UK, is quoted, “They have a lot of expertise and experience and often, as they get older, they want to work flexibly.”

And research has consistently proven how investing in a franchise, such as Auditel, opens doors for self-employment, whilst minimising the risks of starting up a business, and enhancing the potential for business development. As the Financial Times reported, “the number of franchise businesses has grown by ten percent over the last two years.”

Your transferable skills

Having worked in the corporate world for most of his career, Paul Foster was looking for a way to take control of his future. “In the corporate world, there can be a huge amount of stress and pressure. I was working for large corporations where redundancies were being made. The older you are, the riskier employment becomes.” Paul had been involved in printing for a number of years, and quickly realised the internet was quickly taking over this industry. “When I was looking for a new opportunity I was specifically after something which allowed me to use my existing skills. The attraction of Auditel was the way it actively encourages previous experiences to be used for the wider business. I am risk averse, but the challenge and excitement of doing something new with Auditel really appealed to me.”

He turned to Auditel when he wanted to create a scalable, profitable, long-term business. Having been with Auditel for just over two years, Paul has benefitted from the systems and support processes Auditel offer, to build both a solid business and a better lifestyle for himself. “I wanted to join a franchise because you become part of a network of like-minded individuals. With Auditel, we have the ability to build project teams quickly, and have access to a wide range of skillsets to call on within the network.”
